John Murphree
Of North Carolina and Tennessee

John Murphree, son of Daniel and Sarah Murphree, was born about 1749 in Bertie County, North Carolina. He later lived in Orange and Chatham Counties, North Carolina, and in Tennessee. He married Rebecca _____ sometime before Feb 1778, likely in Chatham County, North Carolina.

John Murphree, along with his brothers Daniel, William, Levi, and James 'Murphy' were members of Capt. Isaiah Hogan's Company in the Chatham Co., NC, militia in 1772. John Murphree's name appears on a Revolutionary War company payroll 22 Dec 1780. He served in Capt. John Johnstone's Company in Col. John Collier's Regiment of North Carolina Militia, commanded by John Butler, Brigadier General. He appears on a receipt roll dated 29 Jul 1783, for serving 106 days in the militia.

John Murphree died 6 Mar 1828, probably in Tennessee, and his wife Rebecca likely died there on 17 June 1836.

Three of their children have been identified, and there were likely others.

1.Stephen Murphree, b. 3 Aug 1784 Bedford County, TN, md. 12 Apr 1811 Rebecca Brooks (Mrs. Drury Ledbetter, a widow with one son, Hamilton Ledbetter. She was b. 28 Jan 1790 TN, d. 16 Nov 1853 Old Evergreen, Washington Co., TX) and d. 25 May 1840 Victoria TX. Children: David Murphree, b. 4 Dec 1811; Sarah ("Sallie") Murphree, b. 26 May 1813; Elizabeth ("Betsy") Murphree, b. 9 Feb 1815; John Brooks Murphree, b. 2 Feb 1817; Louisa Murphree, b. 18 Jan 1819; Sophia Woodward Murphree, b. 5 Apr 18__; Ann Mary Murphree, b. 15 Jul 18__; Frances Melvina Murphree, b. 2 Jun 1825; Jane Amanda Murphree, b. 15 Mar 1827; William Thomas Murphree, b. 17 Mar 1829; and Virginia Featherston Murphree, b. 13 Feb 1831.

2. Isaiah Murphree, b. about 1786 Bedford Co., TN, and d. 21 Mar 1842 Victoria, TX. ("Isaiah Murphree was buried by his brother Stephen Murphree in Victoria, Texas.")

3. Nimrod Murphree, b. about 1788 Bedford Co., TN.
