John Murphree, son of Daniel and Sarah Murphree, was born about 1749 in Bertie County, North Carolina.
He later lived in Orange and Chatham Counties, North Carolina, and in Tennessee. He married Rebecca _____ sometime before Feb 1778, likely in Chatham County, North Carolina.
John Murphree, along with his brothers Daniel, William, Levi, and James 'Murphy' were members of Capt. Isaiah Hogan's Company in the Chatham Co., NC, militia in 1772. John Murphree's name appears on a Revolutionary War company payroll 22 Dec 1780. He served in Capt. John Johnstone's Company in Col. John Collier's Regiment of North Carolina Militia, commanded by John Butler, Brigadier General. He appears on a receipt roll dated 29 Jul 1783, for serving 106 days in the militia.
John Murphree died 6 Mar 1828, probably in Tennessee, and his wife Rebecca likely died there on 17 June 1836.
